What is a Uric Acid

test?

A Uric Acid blood test determines how much uric acid is in your blood. Most uric acid is dissolved in the blood, filtered by your kidneys and eventually expelled through urine. Certain health conditions and lifestyle factors can result in there being too much or too little uric acid in your blood. This is usually because your body either produces too much uric acid or doesn’t filter it out enough.

Why would I need a Uric Acid test?

Your doctor may prescribe a Uric Acid test if you have signs or symptoms of abnormal uric acid levels. Measuring Uric Acid levels can provide insight into how your kidneys are functioning.

You may be prescribed a Uric Acid test if you have symptoms of gout, have a history of kidney stones, are on medications affecting uric acid levels, or as part of routine health monitoring.

Many potential factors influence uric acid levels in the body. It’s important to note that elevated uric acid levels don't always lead to symptoms or health issues. Our comprehensive private health assessments include all the tests you need to take a proactive approach to monitoring and improving your health. You can add a Uric Acid test to any of our existing health packages. Simply book an existing package and call our team before your appointment.

Your results explained in

detail

Your Results Report (available online and through the post) explains each one of your test results in detail, with no confusing medical jargon. You’ll receive the actual reading for every test we've run, with each result given a 'flag' of green, amber or red.

Green results are within the recommended range for your age and sex; amber results are a little outside what we'd normally expect; and red results are further outside the norm.

Where a result is amber or red, we'll give follow up advice on what to do next - whether that's making lifestyle changes, simply monitoring the result, or visiting your GP for further investigation.

Lifestyle factors, like eating too many foods with purines, can also affect uric acid levels. Test results will vary according to your age, sex and health history. Our detailed Results Report will provide personalised insights into your uric acid levels and what they mean for your overall health and wellbeing.

High uric acid levels in a blood test, known as hyperuricemia, can be caused by: Diet: Consumption of purine-rich foods. Genetics: Family history of gout or kidney stones. Obesity: Increased fat cells leading to higher uric acid production. Medical Conditions: Gout, kidney disease, metabolic syndrome, hypothyroidism, and psoriasis. Medications: Certain drugs, including diuretics and aspirin. Dehydration: Inadequate fluid intake concentrating uric acid. Alcohol: Especially beer, can contribute to elevated levels. Age and Gender: Uric acid tends to rise with age; men are more susceptible. Consult a healthcare professional for full evaluation and management if concerned about uric acid levels.
A Uric Acid test is not a routine test. It is primarily recommended for individuals experiencing symptoms of gout, kidney stones, or those with certain medical conditions. However, there is very little risk to having a blood test. You may have slight pain or bruising from the needle but most symptoms go away quickly.
Your test results and other readings will each be given a ‘flag’ of a different colour: green, amber or red. Green results are within the recommended range for your age and sex; amber results are a little outside what we'd normally expect; and red results are further outside the norm. Where a result is amber or red, we'll give follow up advice on what to do next - whether that's making lifestyle changes, simply monitoring the result, or visiting a doctor for further investigation. If there are any critical results discovered by our laboratory we will contact you immediately, so you won’t need to wait for your full results report to arrive to take appropriate action.
