The tissue transglutaminase antibody (TTG) blood test is a highly effective method for diagnosing coeliac disease. By measuring the levels of specific antibodies in the blood, it provides a clear indication of whether an individual has coeliac disease.

If you are experiencing symptoms that suggest an adverse reaction to gluten, a private TTG blood test can help diagnose or rule out coeliac disease.

What is a private TTG blood

test?

A private TTG blood test is the preferred method of testing for coeliac disease. Through a blood test sample, the levels of specific proteins produced by the immune system, known as antibodies or immunoglobulins, are measured. Increased levels of these proteins have a high correlation with having coeliac disease.

Coeliac disease is an autoimmune disorder whereby eating gluten can cause damage to the small intestine. Gluten is a protein found in wheat, rye, and barley that triggers an immune response when consumed by an individual with coeliac disease. During the immune response, the finger-like projections that line the small intestine, called villi, become damaged. The damage to these villi can affect nutrient absorption, which can ultimately lead to other health issues.

Why take a private TTG blood

test?

f you are experiencing common symptoms of coeliac disease and are seeking further investigation, a private TTG blood test is an effective diagnostic tool. Coeliac disease can cause significant discomfort and disruption to daily life, as well as long-term health complications. So, testing is a crucial first step in effectively managing and treating the condition.

The symptoms of coeliac disease can vary from mild to severe and do not present like a typical allergic reaction. Common symptoms of coeliac disease to look out for, include:

  • Diarrhoea
  • Constipation
  • Excessive wind
  • Unexplained nausea and vomiting
  • Abdominal pains, cramping or bloating
  • Unexpected weight loss
  • Anaemia
  • Tiredness
  • Mouth ulcers
  • Tooth enamel issues
  • Fertility problems
  • Ataxia (loss of balance and coordination)
  • Peripheral neuropathy (numbness or tingling in the hands and feet)

What does a TTG blood test

involve?

Along with taking information about family history, as coeliac disease is often hereditary, blood testing is a preferred method of diagnosing this disorder. A TTG blood test involves a small sample of blood being taken by a trained health assessment specialist. The sample is then analysed for the presence of proteins known as antibodies. Antibodies are proteins produced by the immune system in response to the presence of antigens, which can be foreign substances or toxins.

Individuals with coeliac disease produce tissue transglutaminase antibodies (tTGA) and endomysial antibodies (EMA) when gluten is consumed. Increased levels of these antibodies are highly suggestive of a confirmation of coeliac disease.

Individuals should continue to eat gluten prior to testing. Limiting gluten intake leading up to the TTG blood test may make the results less clear and a diagnosis more difficult to confirm.

Your test results and other readings will each be given a ‘flag’ of a different colour: green, amber or red. Green results are within the recommended range for your age and sex; amber results are slightly outside what we'd normally expect; and red results are further outside the norm.

Where a result is amber or red, we'll give follow-up advice on what to do next - whether that's making lifestyle changes, simply monitoring the result, or visiting your doctor for further investigation.

If there are any critical results discovered by our laboratory, we will contact you immediately, so you won’t need to wait for your full Results Report to arrive to take appropriate action.

The TTG blood test can be added to our Full Body Health MOTs, providing an indication of whether or not you may have coeliac disease. The TTG blood test is also offered as an individual test. However, we recommend buying our full health check packages to get the best overview of your health. In addition to a wide range of health tests, following your appointment, you'll receive a personalised Results Report and free 24/7 GP helpline access for an entire year.

Full preparation instructions will be provided in writing when you book your appointment. These instructions will include information on which foods to avoid and more. Additionally, it is important that you drink enough water before the test.

As some medications can affect your test results, you will need to inform us about any medicines or supplements you are currently taking. Please do not stop taking your medications unless directed to.
