Book a SHBG Blood Test

Book a SHBG Blood

Test

Find out if you have an SHBG hormone imbalance that could be affecting your mood, fertility, libido and energy levels.

Because your health matters.

An SHBG Blood Test measures the level of sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) in your blood. SHBG controls the amount of testosterone that your body tissues can use. Too little testosterone in males and too much testosterone in females can cause health problems.

Our SHBG Blood test is part of our comprehensive private health checks. It can also be added as an extra individual test to many of our full body health packages. Explore our packages and book online today.

What is a SHBG blood

test?

An SHBG Blood Test measures the level of sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) in your blood. SHBG is a protein that binds to three sex hormones found in both men and women: testosterone, dihydrotestosterone, and estradiol.

An SHBG blood test measures the amount of free testosterone in your bloodstream. It is primarily used to help evaluate men for low testosterone and women for excess testosterone. Normal SHBG levels vary according to gender, age and medical history. However, many other factors can influence SHBG levels and cause them to be abnormally low or high.

Why would I need a SHBG blood test?

Your doctor may prescribe a SHBG Blood test if you have signs or symptoms of abnormal testosterone levels. Measuring SHBG levels can provide information about how much of your testosterone is active in the tissues of your body.

In adult men, symptoms include infertility, erectile dysfunction and low libido. In adult women, symptoms include irregular menstrual periods, infertility, and excessive facial and body hair.

Many potential factors influence SHBG levels in the body. While it is important to measure testosterone levels, results should always be examined by a qualified health professional.

Our comprehensive private health assessments include all the tests you need to take a proactive approach to monitoring and improving your health. You can add an SHBG test to any of our existing health packages. Simply book an existing package and call our team before your appointment.

Your results explained in

detail

Your Results Report (available online and through the post) explains each one of your test results in detail, with no confusing medical jargon. You’ll receive the actual reading for every test we've run, with each result given a 'flag' of green, amber or red.

Green results are within the recommended range for your age and sex; amber results are a little outside what we'd normally expect; and red results are further outside the norm.

Where a result is amber or red, we'll give follow up advice on what to do next - whether that's making lifestyle changes, simply monitoring the result, or visiting your GP for further investigation.

FAQs

The SHBG blood test is currently not available at home. All of our tests are carried out in-person by trained phlebotomists in one of our 350 venues across the UK and Ireland. An in-person test guarantees the accuracy of your test results and enables us to get your samples to the laboratory for testing quickly, giving you your results faster.
Your SHBG blood test results should be examined along with the results of a total testosterone test. Together, these results can estimate how much free testosterone is in your blood. The normal ranges for SHBG concentrations in adults are: Males: 10 to 57 nanomoles per litre (nmol/L) Females (nonpregnant): 18 to 144 nmol/L In your personalised Results Report, your SHBG Blood Test results will be explained in detail. No medical jargon or confusing language - just simple insights into your health with actionable steps for you to take next.
SHBG is not a routine test. SHBG is ordered primarily when an individual’s total testosterone results do not seem consistent with the clinical signs and symptoms they are experiencing. However, there is very little risk to having a blood test. You may have slight pain or bruising from the needle but most symptoms go away quickly.
Your test results and other readings will each be given a ‘flag’ of a different colour: green, amber or red. Green results are within the recommended range for your age and sex; amber results are a little outside what we'd normally expect; and red results are further outside the norm. Where a result is amber or red, we'll give follow up advice on what to do next - whether that's making lifestyle changes, simply monitoring the result, or visiting a doctor for further investigation.
An SHBG Blood Test is used to indicate abnormally high or low levels of testosterone. The test can help diagnose various conditions and diseases, including androgen deficiency and hypogonadism. Test results will vary according to your age, sex and health history. Low levels of SHBG can indicate: - Obesity - Type 2 diabetes - Hypothyroidism - Acromegaly (too much growth hormone) High levels of SHBG may be related to: - Liver disease - Hyperthyroidism - Eating disorders - Hormone replacement therapy - Certain medications
Our SHBG blood test is already included in many of our complete private health checks. It can also be added as an extra test to any individual health package. Call free on 0800 652 2183 before your appointment to speak to one of our team.
