What is a

urinalysis?

A urinalysis urine test analyses a sample of urine to check for signs of various health issues and dysfunction. This common test is also used to monitor ongoing health conditions.

Urine is a liquid produced by the kidneys as they filter out waste products, urea, and excess water from the blood. Following kidney filtration, urine passes through ureters or tubes leading to the bladder, ready to be eliminated during urination.

The colour, appearance, concentration, and content of the urine can reveal how well the kidneys are doing their job, filtering waste products, among other things. By undertaking a visual, chemical and microscopic analysis of the urine sample, which is referred to as a urinalysis, you can gain valuable insights into your overall health status.

Why should I consider having

urinalysis?

Undergoing a urinalysis diagnostic test is a great way to get to know the ins and outs of your health and how well your bodily systems are functioning. The urinalysis test can be used to:

  • Check on your overall health
  • Help diagnose kidney or liver disease
  • Assess diabetes or prediabetes risk
  • Detect bacterial infections such as UTIs
  • Check for yeast infections
  • Identify liver or bile duct damage
  • Detect the presence of kidney or bladder stones
  • Monitor a pre-existing medical condition

Whether you have experienced certain symptoms or are just interested in exploring your health and wellness further, the results of urinalysis can offer in-depth insight. A urinalysis test may be advised if you have experienced:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Back pain
  • Frequent urination
  • Painful urination
  • Blood in the urine

The test is also recommended as a means to monitor previously diagnosed conditions, such as UTIs, liver disease, kidney disease, and diabetes, for signs of improvement in response to treatment.

What is tested for in a

urinalysis?

During a Urinalysis Test, the urine sample goes through three stages of analysis to test for a wide range of infections and disorders. From urinary tract infections (UTIs) to the presence of blood in the urine to signs of kidney and liver disease, interpreting urinalysis can help you better understand how well your body’s systems are functioning.

Visual assessment

A visual assessment examines the colour, clarity, and appearance of the urine sample. How a sample appears to the expert eye can reveal clues about the state of an individual’s health. A healthy urine sample is a clear shade of yellow in appearance. Cloudy, foamy, or dark-tinted urine points to the presence of an infection or other health conditions.

Chemical test

The chemical content of urine is also analysed to check for the presence of specific substances. A plastic strip with a chemically treated surface is dipped into the urine sample. When in contact with certain substances, this strip changes colour.

This test checks the acidity or pH level in your urine, identifies abnormally high protein levels, measures levels of glucose or ketones and detects bilirubin or blood in the urine. Furthermore, the chemical test checks for nitrites and leukocytes that are commonly found in UTI cases.

Microscopic analysis

A microscopic analysis involves examining a tiny sample of concentrated urine under a microscope. Elevated levels of red blood cells, white blood cells, bacteria, or crystals can be detected in this part of the urinalysis.

FAQs

Our Urinalysis Test can be carried out at home using a self-collection kit with clear instructions on how to collect a urine sample.

Your results will be given a ‘flag’ of a different colour: green, amber or red. Green results are within the recommended range for your age and sex; amber results are slightly outside what we'd normally expect; and red results are further outside the norm.

Where a result is amber or red, we'll give follow-up advice on what to do next - whether that's making lifestyle changes, simply monitoring the result, or visiting your doctor for further investigation.

If there are any critical results discovered by the laboratory, we will contact you immediately, so you won’t need to wait for your full Results Report to arrive to take appropriate action.

A Urinalysis Test can be added to any of our health assessment packages.

Along with your at-home self-collection kit, you will find clear instructions on how to easily take a urine sample. Before collecting your sample, read through the instructions and make sure you wash your hands thoroughly. Simply collect a small sample midstream as you feel the urge to pass urine. Once you have the sample, follow the instructions to return it for analysis.
