Private Testosterone Test

Because your health matters.

Testosterone is the major male sex hormone that is responsible for sperm production, sex drive, bone mass, muscle size and strength in men. However, women also have lower levels of testosterone in their blood to help maintain hormone balance and regulate other body functions.

A private testosterone test can detect abnormally high or low testosterone levels, which may indicate an adrenal problem. It can also be used to monitor your health if you have had abnormal testosterone results in the past or are taking medications that may affect your testosterone levels.

Our private Testosterone Test offers a quick, easy, and accurate assessment of your testosterone levels. It can be booked individually or added as an extra test to our health MOTs to tailor your health assessment according to your specific needs.

What is a private testosterone

test?

A testosterone test assesses the levels of the hormone testosterone in your blood. Testosterone is the major male sex hormone; it influences various aspects of male health and wellbeing and plays a crucial role in developing and maintaining male characteristics.

Although often associated solely with men, women also have small amounts of testosterone in their blood, as it plays a vital role in maintaining hormonal balance.

Testosterone is primarily produced in the testicles but is also produced in small amounts by the adrenal glands in both men and women and in the ovaries of women.

Why take a testosterone

test?

Abnormal levels of testosterone can affect men and women in different ways.

For men, it is normal for levels of testosterone to start to decline after the age of 30. However, abnormally low levels could indicate an endocrine issue and cause symptoms such as:

  • Low sex drive (libido)
  • Impotence (erectile dysfunction)
  • Fatigue
  • Weakness
  • Loss of body hair
  • Breast growth
  • Reduced testicle size
  • Skin changes

Abnormally high testosterone levels in men are most often associated with the use of anabolic steroids. This can cause symptoms such as:

  • Acne
  • Mood swings
  • Stunted growth
  • Weight gain

For women, higher levels of testosterone can be associated with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) and cause:

  • Facial hair
  • Acne
  • Enlarged clitoris
  • Increased muscle mass
  • Deepening of voice
  • Infertility

Low levels of testosterone in women can result in a range of symptoms, including:

  • Low sex drive
  • Lack of energy
  • Loss of strength
  • Irregular menstrual cycle
  • Depression

If you have previously had an irregular testosterone level result or are taking medications that may affect your testosterone levels, it may also be beneficial for you to have regular testosterone tests.

What does a testosterone test involve?

A testosterone test involves taking a blood sample to check the levels of the hormone in your blood. The blood sample must be taken in the morning, as testosterone levels are usually highest earlier in the day.

A trained health assessment specialist will take a blood sample from a vein in your arm using a small needle. Once the needle is inserted, a small amount of blood is collected into a test tube, which is then sent to a lab for testing. This procedure is typically takes only a few minutes.

A simple blood test is performed to test testosterone levels in the blood. The blood test must be carried out in the morning as this is when testosterone levels are highest.

At Bluecrest, we offer testosterone tests at high quality venues across the UK and Ireland. Simply find a location near you and book an appointment with a health assessment specialist.

Testosterone tests are best carried out in the morning when your testosterone levels are highest. Some providers may recommend fasting before the test, so it is best to check with your chosen provider.

Fasting means not eating or drinking anything but water for anywhere between 8 to 12 hours before a blood test. You can usually take any medications you normally would in the morning before your test.

If you book a private testosterone blood test with Bluecrest, full details of any preparation required prior to testing, including fasting will be provided to ensure we are able to provide accurate results.

Your test results and other readings will each be given a ‘flag’ of a different colour: green, amber or red. Green results are within the recommended range for your age and sex; amber results are slightly outside what we'd normally expect; and red results are further outside the norm.

Where a result is amber or red, we'll give follow-up advice on what to do next - whether that's making lifestyle changes, simply monitoring the result, or visiting your doctor for further investigation.

If there are any critical results discovered by our laboratory, we will contact you immediately, so you won’t need to wait for your full Results Report to arrive to take appropriate action.

A private testosterone test is suitable for anyone who may be concerned that their hormone levels are abnormal.

Although testosterone is primarily considered a ‘male hormone’ and tests may be more common for males, women do have lower levels of testosterone, and abnormal levels can indicate health problems like Polycystic Ovary Syndrome.

Full preparation instructions will be provided in writing when you book your appointment. These instructions will include information on which foods to avoid and more. Additionally, it is important that you drink enough water before the test.

As some medications can affect your test results, you will need to inform us about any medicines or supplements you are currently taking. Please do not stop taking your medications unless directed to.

At home Testosterone Tests, although a practical option, will not give you the most complete results. With Bluecrest Wellness, you can choose a test location close to home, making our testosterone tests easily accessible and offering comprehensive results.

We run our affordable private health checks from high quality venues across the UK and Ireland. Simply find a location near you and book an appointment with a health assessment specialist.

A testosterone test can be booked individually, or you can book a Male Hormone Profile, which provides a panel of blood tests to check seven important hormones and a private 15-minute GP consultation to discuss the results.

The signs of low testosterone in males can include reduced sex drive, low energy levels, feelings of depression, irritability, hair loss, erectile dysfunction, reduced muscle mass, breast growth, skin changes and weight gain.

Your Testosterone Test sample will be analysed by one of the leading laboratories in the UK. Once they have analysed your blood test sample, your test results are analysed and used to create your personalised Results Report.
