Private Heart Rhythm Check

Because your health matters.

A heart rhythm check, also known as an Electrocardiogram (ECG), is a routine test that records your heart rate, rhythm, and electrical activity through sensors attached to your skin. The heart’s electrical activity is what coordinates your heartbeats.

A heart check-up can detect a range of heart conditions, such as heart disease or damage to the heart muscle, and can be used to monitor existing heart conditions.

Our private heart rhythm check is a quick, safe, and accurate way to monitor your heart health by measuring your heart’s rate and rhythm. It can be carried out as part of our full-body health check packages or booked individually.

What is a heart rhythm

check?

A heart rhythm check, also known as an ECG, is a safe, routine, and non-invasive test that measures your heart rate, rhythm, and electrical activity to give a clearer picture of the way your heart functions.

An ECG detects the signals produced by your heart's electrical system as it pumps blood around your body. The signals are recorded by an ECG machine and transformed into a reading, which is recorded as a series of electronic waves. A doctor reviews these readings to assess any abnormalities.

A heart rhythm check can be used to help diagnose a range of heart problems, including:

  • Angina
  • A heart defect
  • Fast, slow or irregular heartbeats, known as arrhythmias
  • Damage to the heart
  • Heart attack
  • Coronary artery disease
  • Heart valve disease
  • Structural heart abnormalities, like an enlarged heart

Why should you have a heart rhythm

check?

If you're worried about your heart health, you may want to check your heart rhythm. This can provide reassurance and help identify any potential issues, often before you start having symptoms.

Anyone can book a heart health check at any time, but if you experience any of the following symptoms regularly, it’s recommended to get your heart rhythm checked as soon as possible:

  • Chest pain
  • Heart palpitations
  • Shortness of breath
  • Dizziness
  • Weakness or fatigue
  • Having treatment or surgery that requires your heart health to be checked first

You may also be encouraged to have regular heart checks if you are at higher risk of developing certain heart conditions. Risk factors which can increase your risk of developing heart conditions include:

  • Smoking
  • Frequently drinking alcohol
  • Eating an unhealthy diet high in saturated fats
  • Living with overweight or obesity
  • Not regularly exercising
  • Having a family history of heart conditions
  • Having diabetes
  • Having high cholesterol
  • Having high blood pressure (hypertensive)

If these risk factors resonate with you, a heart rhythm check could help you understand how to take a proactive approach to reducing some of your risk factors.

How to check heart

health?

Checking your heart health involves a Health Assessment Specialist measuring your heart rate, rhythm, and electrical activity at rest using an ECG machine, which measures the electrical signals produced by your heart.

  1. Before the test, you will be asked to remove your shoes and socks to allow a health assessment specialist to place electrodes on your ankles and arms.
  2. You will then be asked to lie back and relax on an examination bed. A health assessment specialist will prepare the areas of your skin where they will stick electrodes.
  3. Electrodes will be placed on your arms, and legs to detect your heart's electrical signals. They are connected by wires to an ECG machine that transforms the information into a graphical representation of your heart's activity. Try to lie still and relax during the test, as moving or tensing your muscles can affect the recording.
  4. Once your Health Assessment Specialist is happy they have a reading, they will remove the electrodes and ask you to replace your clothing and shoes.
  5. The information gets sent to our specialist partner laboratory for interpretation. Ideally, your heart rate will be between 60 to 100 beats per minute and show a regular rhythm throughout the test.

FAQs

A heart rhythm check is carried out by a Health Assessment Specialist and only takes around 15 minutes to complete.
A heart rhythm check is a safe, painless, and non-invasive procedure that measures the rhythm of your heart and electrical activity. There is no electricity sent through your body during the test.
Your test results and other readings will each be given a ‘flag’ of a different colour: green, amber or red. Green results are within the recommended range for your age and sex; amber results are slightly outside what we'd normally expect; and red results are further outside the norm. Where a result is amber or red, we'll give follow-up advice on what to do next - whether that's making lifestyle changes, simply monitoring the result, or visiting your doctor for further investigation. If there are any critical results discovered by our laboratory, we will contact you immediately, so you won’t need to wait for your full Results Report to arrive to take appropriate action.
You may need a heart rhythm check if you are experiencing: - Chest pain - Heart palpitations - Shortness of breath - Dizziness - Weakness or fatigue - Having treatment or surgery that requires your heart health to be checked first
