What is a private diabetes

test?

developing diabetes. There are a number of ways to get tested for diabetes, including taking blood and urine samples and fasting and non-fasting tests. However, the most commonly used test is the HbA1c test.

The HbA1c test measures the amount of glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) in the blood. Glycated haemoglobin is produced when the sugar or glucose in your blood attaches to the red blood cells. As the lifespan of a red blood cell is 2-3 months, the HbA1c test is an ideal way to measure the average amount of glucose in your blood during the 2-3 months prior to the sample being taken.

In comparison, standard glucose testing for diabetes only provides you with a snapshot of the blood glucose level at the time the sample was taken. Another advantage of the HbA1c blood test for diabetes is that it does not require you to fast beforehand, making it a favourable form of testing.

Bluecrest Wellness recognises that convenience is key and offers the HbA1c test as an individual test and as part of our health assessment packages.

Why should I have a private diabetes

test?

Testing for diabetes can help to diagnose prediabetes and type 2 diabetes earlier. Early detection means that with dietary and lifestyle changes or medication, diabetes can be managed. If left untreated, diabetes can lead to the development of further health conditions such as cardiovascular disease, eye problems, nerve damage, and more. It is advisable to undergo a private Diabetes Test if you are experiencing these common symptoms:

Urinating more often than usual Feeling thirsty Tiredness or fatigue Unexplained weight loss Itching around the genital area Frequent cases of thrush Delayed healing of cuts and wounds Blurry vision

Certain individuals are more at risk of diabetes than others, as ethnicity, age, weight, and genetics play a part in the development of diabetes. The following people should prioritise getting a diabetes check:

Individuals aged 40 or over People from an Asian, Black African or Black Caribbean ethnic background Having a close relative, such as a parent, brother or sister with diabetes Individuals who are overweight or categorised as obese People who are physically inactive

What does a diabetes test

involve?

An HbA1c diabetes test checks for the amounts of glycated haemoglobin in the bloodstream. Levels of glycated haemoglobin are higher in individuals with diabetes as more and more glucose molecules attach to the red blood cells in the blood. Over a period of 2-3 months, the typical lifespan of a red blood cell, the HbA1c test can reveal average glucose levels during this timeframe.

The HbA1c test involves blood work for diabetes being taken so that your HbA1c levels can be analysed. A normal result for a non-diabetic would be below 42 mmol/mol. For individuals diagnosed with diabetes, an HbA1c level of 48 mmol/mol or below is considered ideal.

After undergoing your HbA1c diabetes test, you will receive your comprehensive Results Report indicating whether you are at risk of diabetes or prediabetes, enabling you to take appropriate action.

FAQs

The HbA1c blood test evaluates your risk of diabetes and is a far more accurate form of testing for diabetes than standard glucose testing. The HbA1c test measures your average blood glucose levels over the last 2-3 months, whereas standard glucose tests provide only a snapshot.

Your results will be given a ‘flag’ of a different colour: green, amber or red. Green results are within the recommended range for your age and sex; amber results are slightly outside what we'd normally expect; and red results are further outside the norm.

Where a result is amber or red, we'll give follow-up advice on what to do next - whether that's making lifestyle changes, simply monitoring the result, or visiting your doctor for further investigation.

If there are any critical results discovered by the laboratory, we will contact you immediately, so you won’t need to wait for your full Results Report to arrive to take appropriate action.

There is no need to fast prior to the HbA1c Diabetes Test. We have upgraded our range of tests so you can continue to eat and drink normally before your assessment takes place, but full preparation instructions will be provided in writing when you book your appointment.
