Private HbA1c Blood Test

Because your health matters.

Type 2 diabetes is a condition where blood sugar levels become excessively high, while pre-diabetes is characterised by higher-than-normal blood sugar levels that aren't yet high enough to be classified as diabetes.

Unlike type 1 diabetes, which cannot be prevented, the onset of pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes can often be prevented through lifestyle changes such as eating a healthy, balanced diet, losing weight, and exercising more.

Our private HbA1c blood test is a quick, easy, and accurate way to analyse your blood sugar levels and assess your risk of developing pre-diabetes or type 2 diabetes. A HbA1c blood test is carried out as part of our full body health check packages.

What is an HbA1c

test?

A private HbA1c blood test provides insights into your average blood sugar levels over the last two to three months. It is used to diagnose pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes and to monitor blood sugar levels in people living with diabetes.

An HbA1c test measures the percentage of glycated haemoglobin in your blood. Glycated haemoglobin is produced when the sugar in your blood sticks to your red blood cells. Your body cannot use this sugar, so it builds up in your blood. This can cause diabetes and diabetes-related complications, such as problems with your eyes and feet. It can also put you at increased risk of other health conditions like stroke and heart disease.

People living with diabetes should have an HbA1c blood test at least annually, but some may need more regular checks if their blood sugar level readings are too high.

Whether you have diabetes or not, regularly checking your HbA1c level can help you understand your blood sugar levels and whether you need to take proactive steps to reduce them. This could include things like eating a healthier diet, trying to lose weight, or exercising more.

Why should you check your

HbA1c?

You may want to consider booking a private HbA1c test and checking your blood sugar levels if:

  • You have already been diagnosed with diabetes
  • You think you may be at risk of type 2 diabetes or pre-diabetes

But how do you know if you are at risk of developing pre-diabetes or type 2 diabetes?

The symptoms of diabetes are varied but generally include:

  • Needing to urinate frequently, especially at night
  • Being very thirsty
  • Feeling more tired than usual
  • Losing weight without trying
  • Recurrent genital itching or thrush
  • Cuts and wounds take longer to heal
  • Blurred eyesight
  • Increased hunger

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, you should consider getting your HbA1c levels tested.

In addition, certain factors can increase your risk of developing diabetes. Factors that can increase your risk of diabetes include:

  • Living with overweight or obesity
  • Your age - you’re more at risk if you’re White and over 40 or over 25 and of African-Caribbean, Black African, Chinese, or South Asian ethnicity
  • Race and ethnicity – people of African-Caribbean, Black African, Chinese, or South Asian ethnicity are more at risk
  • Having high cholesterol levels
  • Having a parent, sibling, or child with diabetes
  • Having high blood pressure
  • Having a high waist measurement – i.e. carrying a lot of fat around your middle
  • Smoking
  • Having gestational diabetes during pregnancy

If any of these risk factors resonate with you, you should consider regular HbA1c testing. This will enable you to monitor your blood sugars and take proactive steps to try and reduce them if they start creeping up.

What does a private HbA1c test

involve?

A private HbA1c blood test involves taking a small sample of blood, which is then analysed to measure the percentage of glycated haemoglobin in your blood, known as A1c. The blood sample can be taken from your arm or via a finger prick test.

The amount of HbA1c formed is related to the average concentration in your bloodstream. As red blood cells live for two to three months, the test provides an indication of your blood sugar levels over that time.

FAQs

At home HbA1c blood tests, although a practical option, will not give you the most complete results. With Bluecrest Wellness, you can choose a test location close to home, making our private HbA1c blood tests easily accessible and offering comprehensive results. We run our affordable private health checks from high-quality venues across the UK and Ireland. Simply find a location near you and book an appointment with a Health Assessment Specialist.

Your test results and other readings will each be given a ‘flag’ of a different colour: green, amber or red. Green results are within the recommended range for your age and sex; amber results are slightly outside what we'd normally expect; and red results are further outside the norm.

Where a result is amber or red, we'll give follow-up advice on what to do next - whether that's making lifestyle changes, simply monitoring the result, or visiting your doctor for further investigation.

If there are any critical results discovered by our laboratory, we will contact you immediately, so you won’t need to wait for your full Results Report to arrive to take appropriate action.

Full preparation instructions will be provided in writing when you book a private HbA1c test. These instructions will include information on which foods to avoid and more before the test. Additionally, it is important that you drink enough water before the test.

Some medications can affect your test results, so you must inform us about any medicines or supplements you are currently taking. Please do not stop taking your medications unless directed to.

A private HbA1c blood test can be booked as part of our Full Body Health MOTs, providing you with an overview of the functioning of your blood sugar levels alongside other key tests. We recommend buying our full health check packages to get the best overview of your health. In addition to a wide range of health tests, following your appointment, you'll receive a personalised Results Report and free 24/7 GP helpline access for an entire year.

Your HbA1c blood sample will be analysed by one of the leading laboratories in the UK. Once they have analysed your blood test sample, your test results are analysed and used to create your personalised Results Report.
