What is an LH Blood Test?

An LH Blood Test is used to check how well your reproductive system functions, providing insights into factors that may affect fertility and conception.

The LH Blood Test measures the amount of luteinising hormone in the blood to determine fertility status and if there are any reproductive health concerns to be addressed. LH is often used in conjunction with other tests (FSH, testosterone, oestradiol and progesterone) in the investigation of infertility in both men and women.

The LH Blood Test is commonly used to help detect:

  • Menopause
  • Testicular failure
  • Ovarian failure
  • Pituitary disorders
  • Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)

An LH Test is a quick and easy way to get to know your body’s luteinising hormone level, determining your fertility status and reproductive health.

What is LH in a Blood Test?

Produced by the pituitary gland in the brain, Luteinising hormone (LH) controls the function of the sex organs (ovaries or testes). In women, LH is released into the bloodstream to instruct the ovaries to release an egg. In men, LH affects the production of testosterone. When testing for levels of LH in the blood, we can see whether the testes in men and ovaries in women are functioning normally.

Why take an LH (Luteinising Hormone) Test?

An LH Blood Test can help to detect the causes of reproductive and fertility issues. It is recommended to take an LH Blood Test should you be concerned about your fertility status or reproductive health.

The LH Blood Test is commonly used if you experience any of the following:

  • Irregular or absent periods
  • Difficulty trying to conceive
  • To check fertility in both men and women

An LH Test is a quick and easy way to know how well your reproductive system is functioning, indicating if you have any hidden fertility issues or undiagnosed conditions.

What does an LH Blood Test involve?

A blood sample will be taken, using a small needle, from a vein in your arm. The small sample of blood is then collected into a test tube. The test is painless, though you may feel a slight sting when the needle is inserted and taken out. The whole process typically takes less than five minutes. After the blood is drawn into a vial, the blood sample is sent to a laboratory for testing.

Ways in which you should prepare for the test:

  • Refrain from taking the supplement biotin for 72 hours before the LH Blood Test.
  • Drink plenty of water prior to the test to help with the collection of blood.
  • If you have been prescribed anticoagulant medication, take this after the test and not before.
  • Wear loose clothing to provide easy access for the blood draw.

FAQs

A LH Blood Test measures the levels of luteinising hormone in the bloodstream. Healthy levels of LH are associated with the proper functioning of the reproductive system. An LH Blood Test can determine if there are any underlying fertility issues or health conditions. When trying to conceive, an LH Blood Test can be helpful in getting an overall impression of your fertility and reproductive health status.

A LH Blood Test can help to detect the following issues and health conditions:

? Pituitary disorders ? Hypothalamic disorders ? Testicular failure ? Ovarian failure ? Onset of menopause ? Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) ? Fertility ? Difficulty conceiving

If the results of an LH Blood Test are outside of the healthy range, additional tests are performed to determine the cause.

Full preparation instructions will be provided in writing when you book your appointment.

For women, should your LH Blood Test show high levels of luteinising hormones throughout the month, this could indicate dysfunction of the ovaries. Normally LH levels rise and fall at different times of the menstruation cycle. Typically, a surge of LH two weeks after menstruation suggests that the ovaries function normally. Consistently high or low results could indicate an underlying pituitary disorder or that the reproductive organs are not working as they should.

In men, a high LH level combined with a low testosterone level could be a sign that the testes are not producing adequate amounts of testosterone. On the other hand, low LH levels indicate that the pituitary gland is not making sufficient LH, which can also negatively affect fertility.

There is no need to fast before the LH Blood Test. However, if taking the supplement biotin, you should refrain from taking this for 72 hours before the LH Blood Test.
