Private DHEA-S Blood Test

Because your health matters.

A healthy DHEA-S level is an indication of properly functioning adrenal glands. DHEA-S is an androgen hormone produced by the adrenal glands and is the building block of hormones such as Testosterone and Oestrogen. A DHEA-S Blood Test can detect dysfunction in the adrenals and undiagnosed medical conditions, such as adrenal tumours and Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

Our private DHEA-S Blood Test is a quick, easy and accurate way to assess your adrenal function. The test can be added to any of our full body health check packages.

What is a Private DHEA-S Blood

Test?

A private DHEA-S Blood Test measures the amount of DHEA-S hormone and whether the levels are sufficient. DHEA-S is otherwise known as dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate, a form of DHEA that circulates in the bloodstream. As the androgen hormone, DHEA-S is the precursor to essential sex hormones testosterone and oestrogen. Too high or too low levels can be the cause of certain health conditions.

Why Would I Need a DHEA-S Blood

Test?

Measuring DHEA-S levels can help assess adrenal function and indicate whether your levels are considered within the normal range. The DHEA-S Blood Test is recommended if you display symptoms or signs of having too high or too low levels of hormones.

A low measure of DHEA-S present in the blood in males could indicate low testosterone levels. For women, both high and low levels of DHEA-S can impact oestrogen production and influence reproductive health. High levels of DHEA-S are often seen in conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), which can lead to symptoms like excess hair growth and irregular periods. Low levels might be associated with adrenal insufficiency and can affect overall vitality and sexual health

For women, it is time to get tested if you experience symptoms such as:

  • Excess hair growth
  • Oily skin
  • Acne
  • Irregular periods
  • Difficulty becoming pregnant
  • Low libido
  • Pituitary or adrenal gland disorders
  • Increased muscle mass

For men, a DHEA-S Blood Test is advisable if you experience symptoms such as:

  • Mood swings
  • Decreased libido
  • Fatigue
  • Fertility issues
  • Pituitary or adrenal gland disorders

Your Results Explained in Detail

Once you have your results, it is important that you understand what the levels mean for your adrenal health. Low and high DHEA-S levels can have implications for women’s health, whilst a low DHEA-S result in men is of more concern.

An abnormally high DHEA-S in women could be the result of health conditions and medications such as:

  • Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)
  • Early onset of puberty in girls
  • Congenital adrenal hyperplasia
  • Adrenal gland tumours
  • Stress and psychological factors

A low DHEA-S in men and women could be the result of health conditions and medication such as:

  • Adrenal gland disorders such as adrenal insufficiency
  • Addison's disease
  • Hypopituitarism
  • Ageing - levels naturally decline with age
  • Prolonged or chronic stress
  • Malnutrition
  • Chronic illnesses
  • Hormones supplementation (e.g. testosterone)

FAQs

A DHEA-S Blood Test determines the level of DHEA-S circulating in the bloodstream and whether this is in the normal range for your sex and age group. DHEA-S plays an important part in the production of testosterone and oestrogen and therefore a DHEA-S Blood Test can indicate any abnormalities in the levels of these sex hormones. Extremely high or low levels of testosterone and oestrogen can have implications on male and female reproductive health and fertility among other issues.
We do recommend buying our full health check packages to get the best overview of your health. However, our range of tests such as the DHEA-S Blood Test are also available to buy individually.
Your DHEA-S Blood Test sample will be analysed by one of the leading laboratories in the UK which have partnered with Bluecrest Wellness. Once they have analysed your blood test sample, your test results are sent securely to our in-house team responsible for creating your personalised Results Report.
There is no need to make any special preparations prior to the DHEA-S Blood Test, however, we do ask that you are well hydrated. Please inform us if you are taking any vitamins or supplements containing DHEA or DHEA-sulfate as this may affect the results. Wearing loose clothing for the test can help the phlebotomists access the blood test site more efficiently.
There is no need to fast prior to undergoing a DHEA-S Blood Test. You can eat and drink as you normally would before the test.
The DHEA-S Blood Test is suitable for all ages. The DHEA-S Blood Test is considered a safe and relatively painless procedure. However, if you experience anxiety with blood tests, let the phlebotomist know so that they can guide you through the process and calm your fears.
Your test results and other readings will each be given a ‘flag’ of a different colour: green, amber or red. Green results are within the recommended range for your age and sex; amber results are slightly outside what we'd normally expect; and red results are further outside the norm. Where a result is amber or red, we'll give follow-up advice on what to do next - whether that's making lifestyle changes, simply monitoring the result, or visiting your doctor for further investigation. If there are any critical results discovered by our laboratory, we will contact you immediately, so you won’t need to wait for your full results report to arrive to take appropriate action.
