At What Age Do I Need a Health Assessment?
Whatever your age or stage of life, prevention is the best medicine. Health checks are important for detecting and preventing diseases and managing risk factors.
Learn the recommendations for when to get a health assessment according to your age.
What is a Health Assessment?
A health assessment is a routine examination of your body that can detect issues early before they become problematic. Health assessments can also identify a person's future risk of disease or illness. Health assessments are sometimes called health checks or health MOTs, but they all describe examinations and tests that measure several body systems at one time.
A health assessment is different from a test. A test investigates one element within the body, such as your iron levels. A health assessment measures many parts of your body in one examination to give an overall picture of your current health and risk factors.
Regular health assessments are valuable tools for early detection of health issues, identifying risk factors, monitoring chronic conditions, assessing organ function, and evaluating overall health status.
What is a Full Body Health Assessment?
A full body health assessment describes a thorough examination of your whole body, unlike tests focusing on a particular organ or body system.
At Bluecrest Wellness, we are passionate about people’s health. We offer affordable, convenient, and accessible full body health MOTs - a cost-effective way to stay on top of your health. A full body health assessment is almost always cheaper than taking individual tests, and by carrying out regular health checks, you can track changes in the body over time and identify potential health issues before they become serious.
We offer three levels of general Health MOTs. Each package will give you a complete overview of your health, including your risk of heart disease and stroke:
Active Health MOT - 22 blood readings, 6 non-blood tests and access to our 24/7 GP Helpline
Core Health MOT - 32 blood readings, 6 non-blood tests and access to our 24/7 GP Helpline
Complete Health MOT - 33 blood readings, 6 non-blood tests and access to our 24/7 GP Helpline and Private GP Consultation
When Should I Start Getting Health Assessments?
The type of health check you need and how often depends on your age, health and family history, and lifestyle choices such as what you eat, how active you are, and whether you smoke or drink alcohol.
It is generally recommended that from the age of 40 onwards is a good time to begin regular health assessments. If you are younger and have risk factors, such as a family history of disease, you should start getting health assessment earlier in order to fully understand both your risk factors and the current status of your health.
Regular health assessments from the age of 40 is the most effective way to detect diseases early. By having a health assessment regularly, you can track any changes in your body over time, which is invaluable as we reach middle age and beyond, when most health issues start to appear.

- How healthy your diet is
- Obesity
- A sedentary lifestyle

Age 20 – 39
In your 20s and 30s, it is wise to begin getting health assessments even if you feel fit and healthy, as risks can easily increase without you being aware. Your 30s is an ideal age to start having health assessment so you can track changes over time and make changes now to reduce your risk of developing health issues further down the line.
Recommended tests for ages 20 to 39:
- Eye tests
- Cholesterol and Lipoprotein(a) as a baseline
- Blood pressure
- Weight and body composition checks
- Sexually transmitted diseases
- Cervical cancer – for women
- Testicular cancer – for men
- Blood glucose
- Thyroid function
Age 40 – 59
In our 40s, our risk of developing conditions such as high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, heart disease and cancer begins to rise. Some conditions can be reversed if detected early, and identifying and addressing risk factors can prevent some diseases from developing.
For women in their 40s, this is the age to consider mammogram testing. For men, prostate cancer risk starts to increase at this age, so it is wise to consider tests for prostate cancer especially if you have a family history of the disease.
During your 50’s, the chances of developing cancer, depending on the type, can more than double. Health assessment can help to rule out any potential problems or identify issues early.
Recommended tests for ages 40 to 59:
In addition to the tests recommended for the 20 – 39 age group, people over the age of 40 should also regularly check:
- Hearing test
- Cardiovascular screening
- Bowel cancer screening
- Breast cancer screening (mammogram)
- Cervical cancer screening for women (Smear)
- Liver function
- Diabetes risk screening
- Prostate cancer screening for men
Age 60 and over
Over the age of 60, health conditions rise dramatically. It’s recommended that you get more frequent health assessments. In addition to the tests detailed for the under-60s, your focus should be on regular screening for cancer and heart disease.
In the later years of life, being able to detect health risks or potential issues early, can mean early treatment and a quick, full recovery. Full body health checks at this age become invaluable tools to stay on top of your health.
Recommended tests for age 60 and over:
In addition to the tests recommended for the 20 – 59 age group, people over the age of 60 should also regularly check:
- Bone health
- Skin checks
- Urine analysis
- Heart rhythm and stroke risk
